Zytek Motorsport (a division of Zytek Engineering) is extremely pleased to announce its intention to compete in the balance of the 2006 American Le Mans Series (ALMS). Zytek will run in the last two races, the Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta, GA on September 28 - October 1 and the final round at Laguna Seca , CA on October 19 - 21.
Stefan Johansson and Johnny Mowlem will team up to drive the Zytek 06S on it’s return to the ALMS, a Series where Zytek Motorsport had great success in 2005, setting poles and lap records and winning the final round at Laguna Seca.
“This is a new year and there is even stronger competition in the LMP1 class, but I believe we are up for the challenge”, said Zytek Motorsport’s race director Trevor Foster. “We are pleased to be returning to the ALMS this season to showcase our new Zytek 06S chassis and Zytek’s normally aspirated 4.0 litre V8 engine. We had a great deal of success in North America last season and our desire is to build on that success and prepare for an all out assault on the ALMS Championship and 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2007”.
Stefan shot to prominence by winning the British F3 Championship in 1980 and went on to win Formula 2 races, before getting his chance in F1 in 1983. He has participated in over 100 Formula One Grand Prix during his career, driving for some of the world’s most prestigious teams and manufacturers, notably Ferrari, McLaren, Ligier and Tyrrell.
Following a successful F1 career Stefan has won the 24 Hours of Le Mans , the 12 Hours of Sebring and competed regularly in the Le Mans Endurance Series in Europe as well as owning and driving in CART and IRL in the USA .
Coming off a GT class win at Mosport recently, Johnny Mowlem is widely considered in motorsport circles as one of the sport’s most able drivers. He has 3 victories and 33 top 5 finishes in 52 career starts in the ALMS. He has also competed in the ALMS and 24 Hours of Le Mans since 1999.
Johnny started racing open wheel in Formula Ford and moved up to Formula 3 and Formula 3000 before finding his niche in sports cars. He hit that category with a bang in 1997 taking the "Gregor Grant Award” for outstanding achievement in world motorsports after winning 17 races in 17 starts in British Porsche Cup.
Zytek is currently finalizing its commercial program for this season and for 2007 and will announce the team partners in the near future.
