The 74th running of the 24 Hours of Le Mans still is more than two weeks away. But in some respects, the race begins this weekend with a nine-hour Test Day scheduled for 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. local time Sunday (3 to 11 a.m. EDT). All 12 entries from the American Le Mans Series are scheduled to take part.

Last year marked the first time the Automobile Club de l’Ouest positioned the Test Day two weeks out from the 24 Hours, the most prestigious auto race in the world. Prior to 2005 the Test Days were held near the middle of May, meaning teams left their cars, equipment and many times personnel in France (or elsewhere in Europe) for upwards of a full month.

It also allowed the American Le Mans Series to schedule races between Sebring and Le Mans, a tremendous development for the Series, its teams and its fans.

“It’s good because you really can test hard and get the car ready, then go home for four to five days before you have to go back,” said Johnny Mowlem of ACEMCO Motorsports.
