Simply put, the best of the best came out on top in the Generac 500 at Road America. Never has there been such a celebrated collection of drivers to claim American Le Mans Series class victories than the motorsports world saw Sunday.
The eight class winners now have a combined 150 victories in the Series since its formation in 1999. That averages out to nearly 19 victories per driver. In comparison only seven drivers Series history have won more than 19 times - four of whom were on the top step of the podium Sunday. Here are the totals:
Frank Biela, 21 wins
Emanuele Pirro, 15 wins
Sascha Maassen, 25 wins
Timo Bernhard, 17 wins
Ron Fellows, 25 wins
Johnny O'Connell, 25 wins
Jorg Bergmeister, 15 wins
Patrick Long, 7 wins
Fellows, O'Connell and Maassen share second place in all-time Series victories, trailing only Olivier Beretta's 28. In all, Sunday's eight winners have posted 413 career starts, 59 career fast qualifiers and 60 career fast laps.
Want more accolades? Try this: The group has combined for 14 Series class championships, with Fellows owning three, and Biela, Pirro, Maassen and O'Connell each winning two.
They also know how to perform on the biggest stage in all of motorsports. Sunday's winners have won 17 times at the 24 Hours of Le Mans since 1999 and are led by Biela and Pirro with four each, including this year in the Audi R10 TDI.
All eight drivers are entered in the upcoming Mobil 1 presents Labour Day Weekend Grand Prix of Mosport. The American Le Mans Series' eighth round is scheduled for 3 p.m. EDT on Sunday, Sept. 3 at historic Mosport International Raceway. The race will be broadcast live on SPEED Channel. American Le Mans Radio's live play-by-play and IMSA Live Timing & Scoring will be available at americanlemans.com.
