Lowe’s Fernandez Racing Takes Fifth at Birmingham Rolex Series 250Submitted by stickell on Mon, 2006-07-31 17:08.Grand Am Adrian Fernandez and Mario Haberfeld drove the #12 Lowe’s Fernandez Racing Pontiac Riley to a fifth-place finish at today’s Grand American Rolex Series 250 at Barber Motorsports Park just outside Birmingham, Ala. Haberfeld started from the inside of the fifth row and drove a clean opening stint as the Lowe’s Fernandez team employed a one-stop strategy during today’s 97 laps of racing over the 2.3-mile, 16-turn road circuit. He was in the lead when he pitted under green on Lap 61 and handed the car over to Fernandez for a sprint to the finish. Fernandez resumed in 13th and steadily made his way back toward the front, passing the final two cars on the final lap for a fifth-place finish. It was the first-year team’s third top-five finish in the last five main events on the heels of its victory in the qualifying race at Phoenix. It scored its maiden race win two events ago at Mid-Ohio. Ruby Tuesday Championship Racing Team Finishes on the Podium at BarberSubmitted by stickell on Mon, 2006-07-31 17:07.Grand Am The Ruby Tuesday Championship Racing Team raced to a third place finish today at Barber Motorsport Park for round 11 of the Grand American Rolex Series presented by Crown Royal Reserve Porsche 250 Patrick Long started the number 23 Ruby Tuesday car from the front row for the two-hour-and-forty-five minute race. At the drop of the green flag, the young Californian went for the lead and was pushed wide by the number 10 in turn one, shuffling him back to fourth. By the end of the first lap Long was able repass for third and was back-up to second position by lap eight. On lap 19, Long turned the Alex Job Racing prepared Porsche Crawford over to Mike Rockenfeller. Rockenfeller played the Iron Man today and finished the last hour-and-forty-five minutes of the race. What looked like rain, which never materialized, had the teams on their toes with strategy. Rockenfeller returned to the race in eleventh position and through strong moves in traffic was able to work his way back to the top three. The German factory driver was poised for one last shot at victory, but was not able to improve any further in the final five lap dash to the finish. Gurney, Fogarty Score Fourth-Straight top-5 Grand-Am FinishSubmitted by stickell on Mon, 2006-07-31 17:04.Grand Am The Porsche 250 presented by Bradley Arant was another near thing for the GAINSCO/Blackhawk team, as Alex Gurney led 18 laps and Jon Fogarty set the fastest lap of the race en route to a fourth-place finish for the No. 99 GAINSCO Auto Insurance Pontiac Riley at Barber Motorsports Park. The solid result for Gurney and Fogarty was their eighth consecutive top-10 finish, dating back to the qualifying race at Laguna Seca in May. The 99 has also finished in the top-5 at the last four races. Both drivers put in flawless drives and had a late-race caution not drained precious minutes from the clock, Fogarty could very well have challenged for the victory — as he turned the race’s fastest lap, a 1:22.679 at an average speed of 100.146 mph, just one lap from the checkered flag. CompUSA Car Dropped From Sixth to 10th on Final Lap at BarberSubmitted by stickell on Mon, 2006-07-31 17:02.Grand Am CompUSA Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates driver Scott Pruett all but had the checkered flag in his sights and a sixth-place result under his belt, but the Krohn Racing no.75 forced the 2004 Rolex Series champion off course in the final circuit of the 2.3-mile road course, dropping the no.01 CompUSA Lexus-Riley to a 10th-place finish. Co-driver Luis Diaz started Round 11 of 14 in the Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series from the seventh spot on the grid, but immediately fell to ninth after being sandwiched and bumped from behind on the opening laps of the 2:45 minute sprint race. The car suffered rear end damage, but Diaz kept fighting throughout his 60-plus lap stint, and turned a very tight car over to Pruett (Lap 62) as the team made its only pit stop of the time-shortened 97-lap race. Rob Huff Okay After Massive Shunt in PueblaSubmitted by stickell on Mon, 2006-07-31 12:35.WTCC
Courtesy of Chevrolet/RML The Mexican round of the 2006 World Touring Car Championship was a character building exercise for the Chevrolet team, with highs and lows. The highs came in race 1 when both Alain Menu and Nicola Larini made up quite some lost ground, despite the race track breaking up. The low was Rob Huff’s massive accident on the first lap of the first race, resulting in the British driver to be airlifted to the Puebla Trauma Centre, where a series of scans fortunately gave him a clean bill of health.
